I was up this morning before 5am. Peachy, our beagle/coonhound, woke me up to go out. I couldn’t get back to sleep. As I sat watching the day begin, I remembered many happy, very early mornings at Grandma Gilly’s and Grandpa Jack’s. My sister Suzanne and I loved to stay there overnight. We were little. Probably [...] One of the things that sold me on this house when we bought it in ‘04, was the Catalpa tree. I have loved these interesting trees since we lived in Minnesota. They have huge heart shaped leaves, incredibly fragrant flowers, and long slender pods that form in late summer. Ours is probably 40 feet tall [...] Twilight falls and one by one candles are awakened. The tall old woods come alive, lit by glowing firefly-like specks. The nighttime inhabitants of the forest step aside and silently allow this event. From behind a bush I watch as candles form a circle. The chanting begins, softly at first, without confidence, but growing. Mournful yet [...] |
